How to Pick Up Your Canes Order the Day of a BC Football Game as a Person of Color: Don't

Elana Felig

The West Campus Raisin Canes is a wonderful addition to the Boston University campus. So much so that it attracts students from all universities across Boston. However, one school NOT in Boston is also a fan of the establishment at 949 Commonwealth Ave. And when they come, they come in pacts. It was a Saturday night, and I needed to fill my belly up before going on a bar crawl. I did not want to do dishes or cook, so placed my pickup order as I always do on Grubhub to get my 3 finger combo with an extra Texas toast and a diet Pepsi (thank you Addison Rae).

But as I walked into Canes, something felt wrong in the air . Now, Canes is usually crowded on weekends as expected, but something was different this time. First I thought I was surrounded by a bunch of high schoolers, but as I got a closer look, I noticed the dark red and gold lettering that people were wearing and I realized: I’m surrounded. I had never seen so many white people in one place on campus. I was just trying to pick up my Cane's order because getting drunk on an empty stomach is a no-go. So you could expect my confusion when I walk in and I see a bunch of Eagles trying to gentrify the Caniac combo. I was worried they thought Nick Fuentes was still a student at BU and they were here for a meet and greet.

To make matters worse, amidst the chaos erupting, someone dropped their drink on my shoe which was when I realized I got hate crimed. As a non white BU student who survived the trenches of a PWI high school, this wasn’t my first January 6th. It felt like So High School by Taylor Swift except instead of stifling my sighs, I had to stifle my childhood trauma.

I just wanted my Texas toast without feeling like I was in the actual red state. The main question I had throughout this endeavor was why they went all the way out to actual Boston just to get Canes. It would take around 30 minutes on the T to get there from their campus. It was the fan behavior for me.

I can safely say I survived but barely. So to protect yourself and your fellow POCs for the future, don’t go to the BU Raisin Canes the day of a BC football game. I’d recommend putting in your Google Calendar when their football games are so you can protect yourself and save up some money to pay for delivery instead. The only thing we can do is make sure they don’t come for El Jefe’s next.
